Prominent businessman and philanthropist Dr. Kudakwashe Tagwirei has been awarded the prestigious Global Award of Excellence by the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church for his unwavering commitment to enhancing SDA-owned educational institutions across Zimbabwe and beyond. The award, a first for an African recipient in the church’s history, was presented at a ceremony held at Solusi University.
The General Conference of the SDA Church lauded Dr. Tagwirei’s “initiatives, both within and outside the Seventh-day Adventist Church,” which they said have left an “indelible mark on the world of education.” His work as the founder of the Bridging Gaps Foundation (BGF) was highlighted, with the church noting that he has “spearheaded numerous projects that have redefined capacity building and transformed infrastructure development across educational institutions.”
Among the achievements recognized were the installation of a comprehensive turnkey irrigation system at Mananda Farm, featuring advanced electrical and pump systems, conveyance infrastructure, infield setups, fencing, and telemetry controls. Dr. Tagwirei also oversaw the installation of over 9 kilometers of pipeline for five center pivots, covering 127 hectares, alongside 5,850 meters of perimeter fencing. Water access was further improved through the drilling of six boreholes and the construction of a pontoon at Mananda Dam.
Dr. Tagwirei’s contributions extended beyond infrastructure. He donated nine Sporting Utility Vehicles, two double-cab vehicles for senior personnel, a single-cab truck, two UD lorries, two 65-passenger buses, and five tractors. He also implemented a significant salary increase and monthly allowances for both teaching and non-teaching staff, while reducing canteen meal prices from US$2 to just 50 cents, fostering a more supportive environment for students and staff.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Tagwirei expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the award for his family. “This honour holds immense significance for me—not just personally, but for my entire family. As a fourth-generation Adventist, this recognition is not merely a personal achievement; it is a testament to the foundation of faith and service that has been laid by those who came before me. It is a moment that solidifies our family’s legacy of commitment to God’s work and His mission,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of giving back to God, stating, “It is one thing to give to God and to return what rightfully belongs to Him.” He emphasized the special place Solusi University holds in his heart, calling it “a pillar of Adventist education, a beacon of excellence, and a centre of influence.”
Dr. Lisa Beardsley-Hardy, the SDA General Conference World Headquarters Department of Education Director, praised Dr. Tagwirei’s “significant contributions” to the SDA Church, underscoring the impact of his philanthropic work on the church’s educational mission.
Dr. Tagwirei’s recognition underscores the power of private sector involvement in advancing education and community development. His contributions, driven by faith and a commitment to service, have left a lasting impact on the SDA Church and its educational institutions.
